Lot: 114  Description: SANTA FE – cast aluminum wall plaque painted in turquoise blue, maroon and tan colors. A beautiful and ornate piece showing the figure holding a spear. Created from designs inspired by the Hopi Indians this measures approximately 27” high and 20” wide with five mounting posts on reverse. These amazing pieces of art were made for the El Capitan trains and first ordered in 1954. “Using Native Designs, Paul Phillipe Cret and assistant John Harbeson of Philadelphia, along with Chicago based designer Sterling McDonald and Santa Fe’s Roger Birdseye, worked together with the Budd Company to create artistic interiors like none other.” (Quoted from Al Wilcoxen.) Al shared with me how he rode the train as a child. He took interior shots of the cars and was able to compile a wonderful photographic library. He and a friend Ken. J. Johnson designed the entire Hi-level El Capitan interiors for the Walthers Corporation HO scale cars as shown in the additional pictures found on line. I will be selling its mate in Auction 100. Very nice condition showing only a couple of small scratched areas, mentioned for accuracy only. Don’t miss this opportunity to obtain this historic offering.
