Lot: 476 Description: MEARS SYSTEM TOLL ROADS PASS - 1899 pass no. 156 issued to Louis King. Two tone brown with light foxing. This is one of the rarest Colorado passes offered in a long time. Otto Mears issued not only the silver passes to build his railroads but also these hard cardstock passes. Originally issued in 1892 the "2" has been crossed out and a 9 written over it. This was issued to Louis King who was the President of the Ouray Stage & Omnibus Company. Otto financed the building of his roads by issuing these passes which gave the recipient the right to access his many roads. Most famous is Red Mountain pass in southwest Colorado, which was originally a stage coach road. Anyone who has had the pleasure of traveling Red Mountain knows what a breath-taking drive it is. And you can imagine the work involved in clearing the way for this road to become passable. Otto Mears built over 450 miles of toll roads in Colorado while also building his railroads which is why he was given the nickname of Pathfinder of the San Juan. Without a doubt these are much rarer than the silver, gold or even the buckskin passes issued by Mears, so don't miss out on chance to add a historic treasure to your collection.
