Lot: 341 Description: ADAMS & WESTLAKE LANTERN - Nickel-plated brass lantern with single wire guard bell bottom frame and threaded twist-off fuel fount, patented in 1864. Features a cobalt blue over clear wheel cut globe inscribed "T. Walton Chief Engineer" with floral wreath design, but small no show top edge chips. The frame has possibly been redesigned as the lid does not resemble the usual early A&W frames. The fuel fount lacks wick control but has an added handle. Plating is worn but can be restored, and the globe is beautiful.
UPDATE: One of my clients was kind enough to share their expertise in regard to this lantern. It is most likely a fire department issue as the lid is designed as a water guard to protect the flame while at a fire. The early pick wick style burner did not have had a thumb wheel to raise the wick but had to be lifted with a pin or small pick. The "handle" is a heater tube which helped heat earlier types of fuel in cold weather to keep them flowing well enough to keep the flame burning. Minimum bid: $300
