Lot: 25  Description: SEABOARD AIRLINE RAILWAY TROPHY – Sterling silver engraved 3-handled trophy cup reads, “Last Spike Completing the Seaboard Airline Railway Driven June 2nd, 1900.” Reverse reads, “Director W. Bayard Cutting.” Engraved wreath with railroad spike in the center completes the design. Manufactured by Gorham with anchor mark & date mark of 1900. This measures approximately 4 ¼” x 4 ¼” x 5”. I was able to find a similar one that sold in 2017 for $700. I am assuming these were personally engraved to the directors of the line. A rare and desirable relic that will be a welcome addition to any collection. Please note: This information was shared with me. On Page 86 of the Seaboard Airline Railway Book by Richard E. Prince. “To each of the 100 directors who will be present will be presented as a souvenir, a beautiful silver loving cup. On it will be hammered the representation of the gold spike around which will be chased a wreath containing tobacco leaves and cotton blossoms, and a sprig of palm. On the reverse side will be the name of the director and a suitable inscription.” The ceremony was held June 2nd,1900 in Richmond, VA; at 17th St, just south of Broad Street.
