Doug SchnackenbergThis issue is dedicated to the memory of a dear friend and fellow collector, Doug Schnackenberg. Doug was one of those people who you just instantly liked the minute you met him. He had the most infectious laugh and just a genuine good guy demeanor that always left a lasting impression. Doug spent his career working on the Great Northern Railroad, retiring in 1998. His passion for collecting railroad keys resulted in him building a collection of well over 1300 keys in his lifetime. Dick & Ruth Zinn and I were fortunate enough to travel to Helena Montana for several years where we would always find Doug happily enjoying the weekend with his fellow railroad enthusiasts. I am honored to be entrusted with offering some of his keys in this issue with others to follow. Doug's son, Henry was kind enough to share with me a wonderful biography of his father that I am sure you will all enjoy reading. Please read this amazing tribute to him. It is a true testament to his love of the railroad. I can say without hesitation that he is sorely missed by not only his family but by the many wonderful collectors who were fortunate enough to know him personally.
Finally, as the COVID restrictions are beginning to lift, we have started to feel a sense of normalcy again here in our neck of the woods. And now with the summer months upon us, I can't help but notice the excitement buzzing around with everyone anxious to reunite and begin to make up for lost time. I hope you all can find time to be outdoors, enjoy the company of your friends and family and perhaps even ride a train! I'm sure the tourist lines will be eager to welcome passengers in the 2021 season. On the same note, we are in the very early stages of planning another Bill Knous Memorial Railroad Show to be held in Fall 2022. We are thrilled at the prospect of being able to gather safely with our fellow collectors and create a space where we can buy/sell, reminisce and appreciate the wonderful pieces collected over the years. While online auctions become more and more popular, we look forward to the opportunities to share in this hobby in-person. Please remember that among the growth in online auction companies, Railroad Memories offers the lowest buyers premium at 5%! We are proud to be able to maintain this lower premium while still offering high quality items for your collections.
