NEW YORK CENTRAL BUILDERS PLATE
View:  Main (LargeView 2 (Large)
Lot: 80  Description: NEW YORK CENTRAL - American Locomotive Company Schenectady Wks March 1907 plate No. 41868; Brooks Works Rebuilt - Feb 1914 brass builders plate measures 13 3/8" x 7 1/4". Off a 2-8-0 engine #2881. Curved for boiler mount and in ready to display condition. PLEASE NOTE: The following information was shared with me by David Thompson. I'm sure this will be helpful to those interested bidders. "It is known to plate collectors as a "double works" plate. When locomotives with a 2-8-2 wheel arrangement were introduced, the New York Central saw that the performance of a 2-8-2 was superior to the New York Central's fairly new 2-8-0 locomotives. The New York Central sent many 2-8-0 locomotives back to their builder, American Locomotive Company, to be rebuilt as 2-8-2's. I believe all the rebuilding was done at the Brooks Works. The plate, Item 80, was cast at the Brooks Works and applied to the newly rebuilt 2-8-2 locomotive. The "double works" plate identifies the original 2-8-0 locomotive as being built at the Alco-Schenectady Works, construction number 41868, March 1907, and rebuilt at Alco-Brooks, Feb. 1914. The construction number of the original 2-8-0 was retained on the rebuild plate. The rebuilt 2-8-2 would carry a new road number. Both Schenectady/Brooks and Brooks/Brooks "double works" plates exist."
